Patrick W. Kelly

Patrick W Kelley was the older brother of Margaret Kelley, our grandmother. He was born in Ohio on June 16th, 1888, the son of Patrick Kelley and Mary King.

In the 1900 Federal Census he was living in Mahoning County, Youngstown, OH. He was 12 years old and was living with his parents and 6 of his living 7 siblings (Anna was married by this time). The living siblings were Stephen J (28), Ellen (20), Nicholas (18), Mary A.(16), Thomas (14), and Margaret (9). Two other siblings had died.

In the 1910 Federal Census there is a Patrick W Kelley, age 24, residing at Augur Barracks, Jolo, Philippines with the 3rd Infantry. He is married and shows the number of years married as “11” but considering his age this may be 11 months. He was born in Ohio and his parents were born in Ireland. His occupation is “soldier” rank of Pvt.

Patrick and Bessie were married around 1910 when he was 21 and she was 17; I don’t know where they were married.

In the 1920 Federal Census he was living in Multnomah County, Portland, OR. He was 31 years old, his wife Bessie was 28 and they had two daughters, both living at home: Gertrude M. age 9 and Edith H. age 6. Bessie was born in Kansas, Gertrude was born in Washington, and Edith was born in New York.

The U.S. Military Records, 1925: Official National Guard Register shows Patrick W Kelley as a Captain in Oregon.

In the 1930 Federal Census he was living in Multnomah County, Portland, Oregon. He was 41 years old, his wife Bessie was 37 and they had two daughters, both living at home: Gertrude age 19 (born 1911) and Edith H. age 17 (born 1913). . Patrick’s occupation was police officer for the City of Portland. Gertrude was working as a stenographer and Edith was still in school.

Bessie’s parents were born in Kentucky. Her maiden name may be Turner..

He was a veteran of WWI, or the “World War” as it was then called. He remained active in the reserves or National Guard for several years. The VFW chapter in Roseburg, OR is named after him.

He died on July 30th, 1931 at the age of 43 in Portland, OR.
